Where I started, Who I Was and Who I Am Today
Wendy’s journey was one of incredible strength, resilience, and unwavering determination. She was always a fiercely independent and headstrong young woman, traits that both empowered and sometimes led her astray. At sixteen, her path took a tumultuous turn when she fell in love for the first time. This relationship, fraught with challenges, introduced her to cocaine. It wasn’t long before Wendy found herself pregnant and abandoned by her partner, who left her for another girl.
The struggles Wendy faced during this time were immense. She fought to overcome addiction while navigating the complexities of young motherhood. But even in the face of such adversity, Wendy’s spirit remained unbroken. She eventually met the love of her life, and together they built a life that seemed to fulfill all her dreams. They had several children, started a business, and Wendy believed she had found true happiness. But life had other plans. Her partner's betrayal was a devastating blow, leaving Wendy heartbroken and struggling to pick up the pieces of her life once again.
Returning to her mother’s home in midlife, Wendy experienced a series of relationships that never quite lasted. Eventually, she found herself in Pahrump, Nevada, with her teenage children. Her struggles only deepened, leading her into the grips of a chemical addiction and drinking. Arrested and facing jail and possibly prison time, Wendy hit rock bottom. However, life offered her a second chance. Despite her hardships—her guy at the time disappearing and her only transportation breaking down—Wendy walked eight and a half miles each way to report for probation and court appointments.
Determined not to return to a life of addiction, Wendy found herself and her inner value. She committed to sobriety and self-improvement, educating herself and joining the Brownsville program. Her journey of transformation led her to Charles Abbott Associates, where she became the only woman in Nye County with seven certifications as a building inspector. Her fierce integrity earned her the nickname “the bulldog,” and she recognized the critical need for building codes, even earning nominations to teach in other countries.
During her time of tribulation and rise to her new self, Wendy faced another heartbreaking loss—the passing of her mother. This profound loss added another layer of grief to her journey, but it also fueled her determination to honor her mother's memory by becoming a beacon of hope for others.
Wendy’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable, and she never stopped learning. Her hard work and dedication were recognized when she was inducted into the Library of Congress as a “Woman of Distinction. She had her case sealed and got a fresh start” But Wendy’s story didn’t end there. She channeled her experiences and personal growth into framing out her 501c3 nonprofit. Her mission was to mentor and offer paths to other young women, sharing her journey of who she was and who she had become.
Wendy’s nonprofit is her next chapter to offer a beacon of hope, providing guidance, support, and opportunities for young women to realize their potential. Her story of resilience, personal growth, and unwavering drive to empower others served as an inspiration to all who knew her. Wendy had turned her pain into purpose, creating a legacy of love, forgiveness, and empowerment that would endure for generations to come. Through her nonprofit, Wendy ensured that young women would have the chance to write their own stories, filled with hope, strength, and endless possibilities.
