The building inspection and code enforcement industry is facing a critical workforce decline—your support directly fuels its revival and reinvention.
Here’s the reality: the industry is aging, shrinking, and struggling to attract new talent. But with your help, we can turn that tide—and bring women and LGBTQ+ professionals into a field that desperately needs fresh leadership.
📉 The Crisis in Code Enforcement
Employment of building inspectors is projected to decline by 71% from 2024 to 2034, with a loss of approximately 11,200 jobs.
Despite this decline, 14,800 openings are expected annually, driven by retirements and workforce exits—not growth.
A recent workforce gap analysis revealed significant barriers to entry, including lack of outreach, limited diversity, and insufficient hands-on training.
The industry is overwhelmingly male and aging, with many jurisdictions reporting difficulty recruiting younger, more diverse professionals.
🔧 Why This Matters
Building inspectors and code enforcement officers are the unsung heroes of public safety. They ensure that homes, schools, and businesses meet structural, fire and life safety, and energy efficiency codes. Without them, communities face increased risks—from unsafe buildings to environmental hazards.
But the current pipeline is broken. If we don’t act now, we risk losing institutional knowledge, weakening enforcement standards, and compromising public safety.
